3-D printing on the micrometer scale

Feb. 8, 2013 ? At the Photonics West, the leading international fair for photonics taking place in San Francisco (USA) this week, Nanoscribe GmbH, a spin-off of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), presents the world's fastest 3D printer of micro- and nanostructures. With this printer, smallest three-dimensional objects, often smaller than the diameter of a human hair, can be manufactured with minimum time consumption and maximum resolution. The printer is based on a novel laser lithography method.

The 3D laser litho-graphy systems developed by Nanoscribe -- the spin-off can still be found on KIT's Campus North -- are used for research by KIT and scientists worldwide. Work in the area of photonics concentrates on replacing conventional electronics by optical circuits of higher performance. For this purpose, Nanoscribe systems are used to print polymer waveguides reaching data transfer rates of more than 5 terabits per second.

Biosciences produce tailored scaffolds for cell growth studies among others. In materials research, functional materials of enhanced performance are developed for lightweight construction to reduce the consumption of resources.

Increased Speed: Hours Turn into Minutes

By means of the new laser lithography method, printing speed is increased by factor of about 100. This increase in speed results from the use of a galvo mirror system, a technology that is also applied in laser show devices or scanning units of CD and DVD drives. Reflecting a laser beam off the rotating galvo mirrors facilitates rapid and precise laser focus positioning. "We are revolutionizing 3D printing on the micrometer scale. Precision and speed are achieved by the industrially established galvo technology. Our product benefits from more than one decade of experience in photonics, the key technology of the 21st century," says Martin Hermatschweiler, the managing director of Nanoscribe GmbH.

Mechanism: Two-photon Polymerization

The direct laser writing technique underlying the 3D printing method is based on two-photon polymerization. Just as paper ignites when exposed to sunlight focused through a magnifying glass, ultra-short laser pulses polymerize photosensitive materials in the laser focus. Depending on the photosensitive material chosen, the exposed or unexposed volume only is dissolved. After a developer bath, these written areas remain as self-supporting micro- and nanostructures.

Removing Barriers

By means of the galvo technology, three-dimensional micro- and nanostructures can be printed rapidly and, hence, on large areas in principle. At highest resolution, however, the scanning field is limited physically to a few 100 ?m due to the optical properties of the focusing objective. Just as floor tiles must be joined precisely, the respective scanning fields have to be connected seamlessly and accurately. By the so-called stitching, areas can be extended nearly arbitrarily.

Debt BlogDebt Management Plans - Tips For Avoiding DMP Pitfalls

?

Posted in Finance
February 9, 2013

Most people are involved in some type of financial transaction or decision every day. Sometimes they can get way behind in their debts and financial obligations with no clear way to pay them off. Some resort to debt management plans, which can help if you are careful in setting up the plan. Do you know how to avoid the pitfalls?

Credit and debt issues are critical life altering realities for almost everyone. The daily decisions we make in handling the balance between the two determines our credit worthiness in the eyes of financial institutions. As we all know, if you have a bad credit rating, then borrowing funds or purchasing many items will become difficult or impossible. But what happens when you get so far in debt that you have no clear way to pay it all off? Many people resort to a debt management plan (DMP). These are payment plans structured in a way so that the borrower is better able to pay off their debts, and is agreed to by the borrower and creditors. The benefits can include lower interest rates and fee waivers.

Once you and the creditors have accepted the DMP, it is important to:

* make regular and timely payments

* always read your monthly statements to make sure your creditors are getting paid according to your plan

* contact the organization responsible for your DMP if you will be unable to make a scheduled payment, or if you discover that creditors are not being paid

If the payments are not made to your DMP and creditors on time, you could lose the progress you've made on paying down your debt, or the benefits of being in a DMP, including lower interest rates and fee waivers. The creditors may not forgive any more late payments and you will incur more 'late' marks on your credit report as well as more late fees, increased debt and a longer pay off period. So, once you are on a debt management plan, make sure that you are never late on any payments. DMPs are not for everyone. You should agree on a DMP only after a certified credit counselor has spent time thoroughly reviewing your financial situation, and has offered you specific advice on managing your money. You may be able to work out a payment plan directly with your creditors. But if you decide that you need to work with a credit counselor and get additional advice and assistance, ask questions like these to help you find the best counselor for your situation and make sure you get full and complete anwsers.

Some Important Questions to Ask When Choosing a Credit Counselor to Handle your DMP:

1. What services do you offer? Look for an organization that offers a range of services, including budget counseling, savings and debt management classes, and counselors who are trained and certified in consumer credit, money and debt management, and budgeting. Counselors should discuss your entire financial situation with you, and help you develop a personalized plan to solve your money problems now and avoid others in the future.

2. Are you licensed to offer your services in my state? Many states require that an organization register or obtain a license before offering credit counseling and debt management plans.

3. Do you offer free information?

4. Will I have a formal written agreement or contract with you?

5. What are the qualifications of your counselors? Are they accredited or certified by an outside organization? If so, which one? If not, how are they trained? Try to use an organization whose counselors are trained by an outside organization that is not affiliated with creditors.

6. Have other consumers been satisfied with the service that they received? Once you've identified credit counseling organizations that suit your needs, check them out with your local consumer protection agency, and Better Business Bureau.

7. What are your fees? Are there set-up and/or monthly fees? Get a detailed price quote in writing, and specifically ask whether all the fees are covered in the quote.

8. How are your employees paid? Ask them to disclose what compensation it receives from creditors, and how they are compensated.

9. What do you do to keep my personal information confidential and secure? They should have safeguards in place to protect your privacy.

Get the information you need to make an informed decision.

Reader recommendation: Half Broke Horses

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

By Martha Barkley, Charleston, S.C. / February 8, 2013

I think Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls is much better than author's first, shocking story of her mother who lived on the street. "Half Broke Horses" explained to me how a dysfunctional family was glued together by one grandmother. Her strength made possible the author's survival, which was a puzzle in her first memoir.

FOR KIDS: When the nose no longer knows

Pollution can endanger aquatic animals by damaging their sense of smell

By Roberta Kwok

Web edition: February 8, 2013

Clown fish raised in acidified waters don?t respond properly to smells. For example, they swim toward the scent of a predator instead of away from it.

Credit: Simon Foale, ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies

For fish, finding the right home is not the only activity that requires a good sense of smell. Fish also rely on scents to find food, avoid predators and prepare for mating. Recently, scientists discovered that certain environmental changes can endanger the sense of smell in fish. People are dumping pollutants into lakes and rivers. Gases released by cars and factories are changing the ocean?s chemistry. Such chemical changes can sometimes affect fish and other water-dwelling creatures in ways that alter or eliminate an animal?s recognition of important smells. And that can endanger those animals.

7 Ebook Content Tips to Make a Good Ebook Great!

ebook-whitepaperSo,? you?ve settled on an ebook (also called white paper) topic that addresses your ideal customers? pain points. You?ve also gotten it a good draft of it put together. From this point, your ebook is looking pretty darn good.

But wait!

Before you upload it to your site, review these points for opportunities to make your ebook great!

?

  1. Use case studies, statistics and quotes to back up your assertions.
No one depends only on the author of a paper or a single company. Back up from a third party, particularly if that entity is known and respected, goes farther than any argument an individual can craft.
  2. Keep it jargon free and write as you speak, simply and clearly.
While your ebook may have initially been intended for the director of a radiology department who has all kinds of specialized knowledge, it will most likely get passed around to an accountant or marketing person who isn?t as knowledgeable or immersed in the niche?s jargon.
  3. Keep the content ?evergreen? or unspecific as to date or season.
People don?t go right to your ebook the minute you submit it to a library or post it on your site. They get there only once they have a need. At that point (which could be six months after you initially wrote it) they research, stopping at several sources to find useful ebooks.
  4. Choose the words your customers are using.
Remember that people often search the ebook archives and even the internet based on their PROBLEM, rather than your SOLUTION. Do the keyword research necessary to find whether there?s more traffic about the problem or the solution. For instance, a caterer may search ?keeping lettuce from wilting? rather than ?refrigeration options.?
  5. Don?t make it a commercial.
Keep all imagined players involved generalized and don?t mention your company?s name too much. Rather than saying, ?Jones & Olive Refrigeration customers often find . . .?? say ?food handlers often find . . . ?
  6. Choose an introduction that grabs them right from the start.
To introduce your topic, consider starting the ebook by naming the problem your ideal customer faces, the problem your business solves. Back up your description of the problem with some facts or statistics about the current state of your market and market trends. Displaying knowledge of both the market and the issues your ideal prospects face build a strong connection between you, the expert, and your reader.
  7. Tell your reader what?s in it for them if they keep reading.
End the introduction paragraph or start the second paragraph by stating exactly what the reader will gain in return for the time and energy required to read the ebook. Name your ideal prospect?s career, hobby, life stage or other identifier.? ?This report/white paper/ebook helps IT directors weigh the risks and benefits of using security software? or ?This report guides senior citizens in choosing a long-term care policy that doesn?t destabilize a fixed income.? People want to know what they?re going to get up front.

One Ebook Can Equal a Steady Stream of Sales Messages to Your Audience

Whitepapers and ebooks are so prevalent for the most obvious reason: they work.? In fact, according to Hubspot?s Dan Zarella, the ebook is one of the very best ways a business can wriggle itself into the life and email of the proper target audience. After all, that the web surfer landed on the page indicates he or she sought the information about the product or service in the first place. If you?re looking to build your email list, you might consider using seven to 10 pages of ?insider secrets? or ?steps to improve . . .? as bait. Not the writing type? Contact us! We?ll get words and images working together to promote your business online.

Monopoly to get new lineup of tokens

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) ? The classic Monopoly game is set for its most significant change in decades after fans of the game designed nearly 80 years ago voted to add a new token to replace the shoe, wheelbarrow or iron after they received the least support in an online contest.

Toy maker Hasbro Inc. is scheduled to announce the new token lineup Wednesday morning, hours after fans cast their final ballots to determine which of the five proposed pieces to add and which of the existing tokens to eject.

The tokens identify the players and have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935.

The voting closed just before midnight Tuesday. Rhode Island-based Hasbro says the wheelbarrow, shoe and iron were neck and neck for elimination through the Save Your Token Campaign. The new addition will be a robot, diamond ring, cat, helicopter or guitar.

Fans from more than 120 countries have voted.

The online contest to change the tokens was sparked by chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million fans. The initiative was intended to ensure that a game created nearly eight decades ago remains relevant and engaging to fans today.

Monopoly's iconic tokens originated when the niece of game creator Charles Darrow suggested using charms from her charm bracelet for tokens. The real-estate trading game is based on the streets of Atlantic City, N.J., and has sold more than 275 million games worldwide.

The current eight tokens are an iron, racecar, Scottie dog, a shoe, thimble, top hat, wheelbarrow and battleship. Most of the pieces were introduced with the first Parker Brothers iteration of the game in 1935, and the Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.
